Over 100 firemen from 27
Monmouth and OceanCounty firehouses
competed in The Atlantic Club’s 2nd annual Firemen Weight Loss
Challenge to benefit. the Food Bank of Monmouth and OceanCounties This eight week Weight Loss Challenge is
sponsored by The Atlantic Club of Manasquan and Red Bank as part of the Take it
Off Weight Loss Program.
The Atlantic Club donated $2,300
to the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties for every pound the
approximately 100 firefighters lost and awarded a $1,000 check to the winning
team, The Unexcelled Fire Company, of Neptune.
The Unexcelled Team shed a total of 243
pounds. Bob McDonald’s, Unexcelled Chief, had the highest overall weight loss of 60
pounds in 8 weeks. “It feels great
anytime you can help yourself and help the Food Bank at the same time, it’s a
win-win situation” commented McDonald”.
During the 8 week challenge,
the Firefighters weekly were given one-on-one coaching, simple recipes using
grocery store foods, and Take It Off educational handouts to help them achieve
their weight loss goals. In addition,
the Firefighters worked out at The Atlantic Club for the 8 weeks of the
challenge.
Many of the firefighters
experienced health improvements during the 8 week challenge. Butch Neis from Northside Engine Company lost
close to 60 pounds. Neis comments “I
went the cardiologist a week ago, my blood pressure dropped, he took me off my
blood pressure and cholesterol medications and cut my heart medicine dosage in
half. I thank The Atlantic Club for
making this happen!”
We’re seen two years of
firefighters take the challenge and have such a positive experience,” said
Atlantic Club owner and CEO Pat Laus. “ The firemen were almost unrecognizable
after the eight week challenge. A donation of a dollar per pound lost goes a
long way for the Food Bank. Its very
rewarding to be a part of something so beneficial to The Food Bank and for those who serve our
community ”
The Food Bank, a member of
Feeding America, distributes 6 million pounds of emergency food annually to 270
food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other emergency feeding programs,
